Lady Gaga Describes Her ‘Crazy Performance-Art Piece’

So far, “Gossip Girl” castmembers have given only vague details about what fans should expect from Lady Gaga’s appearance on the show. But finally, Gaga herself was willing to give us the scoop on her November 16 cameo and why she decided to do it.

“First of all, my sister’s a huge fan, and she’s 17 years old. So when I called her and said ‘Gossip Girl’ wants to put my whole new album on the show and have me perform, she was like ‘Oh my God, you have to do it. It’s an amazing show,’ ” Gaga told MTV News. “And I’d seen it. It’s a great show.”

Of course, Gaga didn’t want her time on the show to be a stereotypically awkward musical-guest appearance on a TV show. She wanted it done the Gaga way. “I hate TV series performances, because they kind of come in out of nowhere, and everyone’s, like, really into the story, and then all of a sudden somebody breaks into song,” she said. “And it has nothing to do with the storyline, and then it screws everything up.”

Rather than showing up on the set for the day, Gaga met with the writers and producers first to make sure she was doing a performance that she felt comfortable with.

“I really sat down with the writers,” she said. “I was like, ‘Look, I want to do this, and the reason I want to do this is because I am trying to say something that is not mainstream in a mainstream capacity. So, if I can say it on your show, that would be, like, a real coup d’état for me as a performance artist.’ ”

The result sounds like an elaborate music video. “I am the narrator behind what is going on with the characters and make the song part of the moment,” she explained about the “crazy performance-art piece.” “We used these ladders, and I’m falling off ladders. Ladders are kind of a monster symbol about bad luck. And I have this 35-foot-long dress on and these X’s, very gothic-inspired. It was great. They let me do whatever the hell I wanted. It was amazing.”

Parents pressing CW not to air Gossip Girl episode

Across the nation teen girls and young adults rush to the TV Monday nights to catch the provocative and often-racy CW show, Gossip Girl – but the Parents Television Council Group think the show has gone too far this time. Here in Philadelphia, the show revolving around the lives of upper-class teen characters airs on CW 57, but the episode slated to air November 9th that apparently involves a sexual threesome between three main characters has many parents furious, and they want affiliate stations not to air the show.

The show, which is based off novels by Cecily von Ziegesar, has come under fire before for what some perceive as high sexual activity among the characters, which many believe has an impact on young girls.

CW representative Paul McGuire, claims that although the show is centered around a teen cast, the target audience is females between the ages of 18 – 34. Apparently on different occasions, CW has denounced the idea that they market the show to a teenage audience. Whether that is true or not, the show still appeals to teenagers, as well as young adults, because it does focus on teenagers.

While their intention may not be teens to be the primary viewers of the show, there’s no doubt teens all over the U.S are soaking it up. However, the outrage over the portrayal of teen’s sexuality is not a new occurrence. In 2006, the FCC fined CBS stations $3.6 million for what they defined as “indecent depiction of teenage sex” in 2004.

At least one person is anticipating the episode. Gossip Girl cast member, Michelle Trachtenberg recently told MTV, “[It's] worth waiting for,” and joked about who the controversial episode would include.

Do parents really have reason to worry?

Tantalizing promos that tease a possible sexual threesome during the Nov. 9 episode of Gossip Girl may have ticked off the Parents Television Council but it seems unlikely the CW will give the advocacy group anything to complain about to the FCC. Though the CW wouldn’t comment on next week’s episode, those familiar with the network’s standards and practices procedures say the infamous Without a Trace teen orgy scene on CBS had a big impact on how the CW depicts sexual intercourse between teen characters, especially on Gossip Girl.

In 2006, the FCC fined 111 CBS affiliates a record $3.6 million for airing what it viewed was an indecent depiction of teenage sex in December 2004. The scene, which CBS said appeared in the final half-hour of primetime and offered a socially relevant storyline for parents, involved teenage boys and girls engaged in a bacchanal. Since then, the CW has attempted to refrain from showing any sexual act between two characters if they are not over the age 18. In simpler terms: there’s always lots of talk but zero visuals. So even if most of the lead characters on Gossip Girl are out of high school, it’s likely the show will play it safe. “They’ll infer stuff but not get real explicit,” according to an industry observer with key knowledge of the CW’s standards. “I’d be surprised if there’s anything real explicit in the Gossip Girl episode.”

As for advertisers, there’s always the chance that action taken by the Parents Television Council could prevent some companies from airing commercials during shows like Gossip Girl. But the broadcast networks — unlike most, if not all, of the cable nets — allow their clients to screen any episode that may be deemed inappropriate before they buy the commercial time. That’s what happened when Microsoft decided to pull its sponsorship of “Family Guy Presents: Seth and Alex’s Almost Live Comedy Show” that will air Nov. 8 on Fox; representatives of the company actually attended the show’s taping and saw what was in store. Even then, Microsoft’s decision seemed odd when Family Guy has a long and well-documented history of pushing the envelope (the show, no surprise, has been targeted by the Parents Television Council, as well). The special has since lured a new sponsor: Warner Bros’ upcoming movie Sherlock Holmes starring Robert Downey Jr.

Blake Lively: My Mom Enrolled Me In First Grade When I Was ‘Only 3 Years Old’

Blake Lively might be at the top of her game now – but when the “Gossip Girl” star was 3 years old, her teacher thought she was struggling with a learning disability – but only because her mom lied about her age.

“When I was only 3 years old, my mom enrolled me in the first grade. My older brother was supposed to start school, but he didn’t want to go alone, so my mom told them I was 6 since I was so tall,” Blake said in an interview with Marie Claire in it’s December issue. “But after a few weeks, they said they would have to put me in mentally disabled classes because I wasn’t up to pace with the rest of the kids.”

The actress said her toddler instinct to for naptime wasn’t welcomed in her first grade class.

“They thought that I was slow because all I wanted to do was sleep while the other kids were doing their projects,” she said with a laugh. “So my mom took me out of school.”

Blake’s mom might have caused concern when she lied about her daughter’s age, but she made up for it with frequent childhood trips to Disneyland.

“I kind of feel like I grew up at Disneyland,” Blake explained. “My mom would take me there twice a week. I did well in school, so I guess my mom just wanted to have some extra time to bond with me. Sometimes, when I was older, she’d keep me out till one in the morning. We only stayed out late on weekends. We’d get a hotel room and then go to Denny’s, drink coffee, and talk for hours.”

Blake says her late night adventures with her mom have helped her to become a better actress.

“I’ve always been a night owl. Even at home, we’d stay up all night talking. My mom tells the most amazing stories,” she told the mag. “In a way, she was kind of raising me to be a great actress without even realizing it.”

GG crossover with The Beautiful Life?

Meanwhile, it’s not that hard to imagine Blair (Leighton Meester) and Serena (Blake Lively) sitting front row at a fashion show featuring Sonya or Chuck Bass (Ed Westwick) flirting with new model Raina (Sara Paxton), so why shouldn’t we expect a crossover between the two New York-based CW shows?

Mike and Karey spilled that they’re already thinking of a way to get the casts of Gossip Girl and The Beautiful Life to join forces in a mega-New York crossover.

While nothing is set in stone for the crossover right now, Mike teased a possible storyline that he’ll be pitching to Gossip’s executive producer Stephanie Savage: “My idea—since these things happen—there are blackouts. The idea is that we have two shows that exist in the same city, and if our cast is on the subway, and their cast is on the subway, and then the subway shuts down. We don’t even have to necessarily cross them; we can simply tell two stories with them in the background and maybe have one or two characters cross through.” Karey also told us she wouldn’t mind Chuck Bass stealing some of the models, natch.

Gina Torres Set to Join Cast

As if Gossip Girl wasn’t already filled to the brim with impossibly beautiful people, Gina Torres has been signed on to play Vanessa’s mother Gabriela. According to TV Guide , it sounds like Gabriela will be as far from Gossip Girl’s cast of uptight Upper East Siders as you can get. A former Brooklyn gal who’s been living in Vermont, Gabriela is set to be a “free spirit” and a warm, vibrant, and opinionated character. Here’s hoping Torres gets to utilize some of her much-loved Firefly character Zoe’s attitude and style.

Gina Torres has been busy since her Firefly and Serenity days, appearing in The Shield, Alias, Without a Trace, and the short-lived series Standoff. Torres provided the voice of Vixen for the animated series Justice League, and starred in Chris Rock’s feature film I think I Love My Wife. She also did guest starring roles on three Acclaimed But Canceled (ABC) series: Eli Stone, Pushing Daisies, and Dirty Sexy Money. Married to CSI actor Laurence Fishburne, Torres gave birth to daughter Delilah in June of 2007.

Those who have thus far resisted the lure of guilty pleasure Gossip Girl may tune in to see what Torres does with her new role. Vanessa (Jessica Szohr) has taken some darker paths this past season, so it will be interesting to see how her mother might influence her choices now. This high society soap definitely has its shallow aspects, but it has enough Jane Austen-inspired self-awareness and wit to make for an entertaining ride. Gossip Girl also nets a wider audience with its multi-generational appeal–the pretty kids have pretty parents, who go through dramas and romances of their own.

Gina Torres is confirmed for two episodes thus far, but the plan is for Gabriela to be a recurring character. Watch the new season of Gossip Girl on the CW, beginning Monday, September 14 at 9/8c.

chase crawford image

Chase Crawford recently sat down with Access Hollywood, and spilled some of the beans about his new love interest on “ Gossip Girl ” for season 3. As we reported before it is going to be ex “Privileged” and “Reba” star Joanna Garcia.

Chase said of his new co-star, “She’s a beautiful southern girl. They’ve got the conflicting family backgrounds, so they kind of hide the relationship and it plays out. It’s good. Joanna Garcia’s lovely, so we’re having a good time.”

He also talked about his newly acquired role in the remake of “Footloose” movie. He said, “It’s been intense. It’s not the gymnastics stuff so much. I have a bit of athleticism so they’re letting me see what takes shape and create something original.”

The original “Footloose” star Kevin Bacon recently said that he’s looking forward to seeing Chase Crawford step into his dancing shoes, and Chase said that’s “really nice !”

The third season of “Gossip Girl” premiers on September 14,2009 at 8pm central time on the CW
